30 Days of Brave | Miles
“Our story began on February 26, 2024, with what seemed like an ordinary workday turning into a moment of uncertainty as I experienced bleeding at 25 weeks and 1 day into my pregnancy. Rushing to the local Wayne hospital, the doctor confirmed our baby's heartbeat was strong and normal. However, an ultrasound revealed that my water had broken, requiring immediate action. Due to the absence of a NICU at our small-town hospital, I was flown to UNMC in Omaha, NE, where a diagnosis of preterm premature rupture of membranes marked the beginning of our journey to prolong the pregnancy. The goal was to make it to 34 weeks.
Every day following that moment was filled with unknowns, I had no choice but to be strong and positive for my husband and our baby boy to keep our family going.
On April 5th, after 5.5 weeks in the hospital, we welcomed Miles into the world at 30 weeks and 5 days, weighing 3 lbs and 2 oz. Witnessing our tiny warrior face numerous challenges during our 10-week stay in the NICU reshaped our understanding of bravery. We watched Mile’s be poked and prodded for numerous tests and everyday it felt like a new challenge rose. Our toughest battle was Miles oxygen levels. Despite numerous desaturations and constant monitoring, Miles' determination shone through. After our 10-week journey in the NICU, Miles returned home with supplemental oxygen, gradually shedding his respiratory support and growing into a cheerful and thriving baby boy.
We are so grateful for the care provided by the UNMC NICU team. Their expertise, patience, and genuine compassion supported us during moments of vulnerability. They kept us strong and took the best care of our little guy. NICU nurses are the best example of bravery and resilience, facing tough situations head-on with unwavering grace, which is simply inspiring. We can’t thank them enough.” NICU Mama, Alyssa
