Logan's NICU Story
“Logan Matthew was born at 7:20pm on October 2022 10 minutes after his twin brother Luke. I was induced at 36w 0d due to Logan growing bigger then his brother Luke at a fast pace. Immediately after Logan was born he was placed on top of me for a few seconds before doctors noticed something was wrong. He was very blue and was having a hard time breathing. His oxygen was in the 60s and they immediately called a respiratory team and took him. A few minutes later some doctors came in and told us they would have to transport him by ambulance to a children’s hospital and that he had to be intubated. My heart shattered into a million pieces. We we’re prepared for some NICU time for Luke because we knew he might be on the smaller side and due to Logan taking more nutrients he might need a little bit of extra help. Luke was doing absolutely amazing band got to stay with me the entire time. They brought Logan in to see me in a box hooked up to so many wires and IVs and a tube down his throat. Next thing I knew he was off to the hospital were he would spend the next 25 days in the NICU. He was born in respiratory distress. The very next day Logan’s amazing dad went right to him to he by his side. We got the news that Logan’s air bags in his lungs were not doing what they were supposed to and he needed something called Surfaxin. We also found out he had a bad case of pneumonia. He was intubated for over a week and almost completely sedated. After they took his tube out he still had a long way to go, he was switched to cpap to help with his breathing because he was still breathing very fast. He had ng tube feeding him. Eventually he was able to get off a the cpap and onto a nasal cannula for a few days then finally he was on room air breathing on his own! He fought so very hard to get better and come home and 25 days later we got the call, Logan was doing great with his feeds, his breathing was stable and he could come home! The day Logan came home his bother Luke wasn’t there, he was in the PICU fighting off a very bad case of RSV, it was so bad he had to be airlifted from the same hospital they were born at to another hospital close to Logan’s, but that’s a story for another day. Logan and Luke are now 9 weeks old and perfectly healthy thanks to the amazing team of NICU and PICU doctors who cared for them. They both had the most amazing team of nurses who worked very hard to get my boys home to us. I’ll forever be grateful for everyone who had a hand in taking care of them. The NICU team will always have a special place in my heart" NICU mama, Rachel
